  • The Blueprint for Engineering Success : Part 1 | SafranFederalSystems

The Blueprint for Engineering Success : Part 1 We are proud to celebrate National Engineers’ Week, a time dedicated to recognizing engineers' impact on shaping the world around us. At Safran Federal Systems, we are fortunate to have an incredible team of engineers whose problem-solving skills, efficiency-driven innovations, and dedication propel our company forward. Their contributions deserve recognition, and this week we are honored to spotlight one of our own: Brent Abbott. This year’s theme, “Design Your Future”, is both a call to action and a celebration of the limitless possibilities in engineering. In this post we’re diving into the real world of engineering with Brent Abbott, shining a light on how collaboration can elevate your career and reflecting on some of his proudest moments. Whether you are starting your engineering journey or just curious about what it’s like, buckle up—because with Brent there are no dull moments. Demystifying the Engineering World When most people think about engineering, they picture a world of numbers and equations. It is more dynamic and collaborative than we tend to assume. “Most of the time when people think of engineering, it's typically very analytical its very math oriented. But the reality is that not only is it just really analytical, as well as really focused on the math, but more importantly, and most of what happens in your day to day is that it involves a lot of collaboration with other people, involves a lot of developing new innovative systems really pushing the edge of technology and really getting the opportunity to jump into complex problems that you don't normally see when you're just head down writing on paper or kind of solve problems themselves. So I'd say that ultimately it's the ability to grow and understand and try something different, try something new that you don't normally get the opportunity to do in other parts of the industry.” Demystifying the truth of what it feels to be in the engineering world. Sitting down with Brent gave us a glimpse of what it means to be an engineer who on the daily are driven to combine the worlds of analytical thinking, problem-solving and creativity to develop innovative systems that solve complex problems. Collaboration is Key No matter the role or industry, collaboration is an essential trait to possess. Whether you are brainstorming solutions, refining a design, or troubleshooting a problem, the ability to work well with others is what transforms good ideas into remarkable innovation. “Collaboration, I would say, is very important to the innovative and development process, mainly because from a team standpoint, you have to know the people that you're working with and get to understand where they're coming from, what those ideas can be as well as the opportunity to learn, grow, experience new opportunities and get feedback on what you're designing and collaborating on. Collaboration provides an opportunity to get a lot of new ideas into the design process that you don't normally get if you're just working on it yourself. With those new design experiences and those other opinions, you really get a more holistic design solution that provides technical capabilities to the customer as well as creates an overall better solution rather than just one that’s designed by an individual themselves.” The ability to challenge each other, bounce off ideas, and refine designs through discussion leads to effective solutions. At the end of the day, the best ideas are built together. The Blueprint — Starring Brent From engineering solutions to engineering his own success, Brent’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and collaboration. “If my engineering life were a movie and what I've done, I’d call it The Blueprint, let’s go with that. I call it blueprints because kind of in engineering you’re always designing something you always have to have some sort of architecture model to what you're developing, so it always is different…I guess the Blueprints because I like music and there's an album called The Blueprint 3 that I really enjoy.” Reflecting on Proudest Career Moments Loving your job is one thing, but true fulfillment comes from making an impact. For Brent, those proud moments happen continuously, each one reinforcing his passion for engineering and innovation. “I love the work that I do, love getting the opportunity to work on new technologies, new innovative things I would say. From a career standpoint, lately, I've gotten opportunities to work in and lead and develop teams that work on cutting-edge technologies that are either refactoring of what we've done today, or completely new architectures and give me the opportunity to work with the team to drive to a solution in the end is what helps drive me and makes me excited about what I do every day…Ultimately, when the customer comes back and says, thank you for what you did you delivered something that was difficult to make, but we're happy with what you provided.” In every career, there are moments when creativity and teamwork come together to build something amazing. For Brent, those proud moments are not just milestones but reasons why he keeps pushing forward and inspiring others to do the same. The Journey of an Engineer If you have ever wondered what it means to be an engineer, we have taken a deep dive through Brent’s perspective. His role is not only about driving cutting-edge technology, but leading, learning, and innovating alongside his team. However, this is just the beginning. Stay tuned for Part Two, where we dive deeper into his experiences, challenges, and other insights. Feeling inspired? Explore career opportunities at Safran Federal Systems CAREERS

This significant expansion marks the company’s latest milestone in its ongoing commitment to growth, innovation, and community investment. Safran Federal Systems first established its presence in the Village Gate Square within Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts (NOTA) in 2018 but its roots in the greater Rochester area go back to 1972. Over the years, the company has progressively expanded its footprint, most recently completing construction on a brand-new second-floor space earlier this year. The newly opened space, dubbed the North Star Operations Center (NOC), will be dedicated to the production and manufacturing of the company’s cutting-edge PNT products, further accelerating Safran’s business operations and enhancing its capability to meet growing market demands. The name 'North Star' pays tribute to its location on North Goodman Street, the historical significance of the North Star in navigation—a key area of expertise for Safran—and the connection to the renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who resided in Rochester for 25 years and published his influential anti-slavery newspaper, The North Star, from the city. To commemorate this exciting development, Safran Federal Systems hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony in partnership with the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, featuring company executives, elected officials, and community leaders, including Congressman Joe Morelle (NY-25), Assembly member Harry Bronson (NY-138), Assemblymember Jen Lunsford (NY-135), Rochester Deputy Mayor Michael Burns, Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Robert J. "We are thrilled to be creating new jobs and contributing to the economic revitalization of this vibrant neighborhood. Our investment here reflects our confidence in the future of this city and our dedication to being a positive force for change." The new facility underscores Safran Federal Systems' mission to drive innovation while fostering local economic development. The company’s expansion is expected to create dozens of new jobs, providing valuable opportunities for local talent and supporting Rochester’s broader economic landscape. As Safran Federal Systems looks ahead, the company remains focused on its goals of continued growth and innovation. • Women Rising: Strength, Mentorship, and Collective Success | SafranFederalSystems

Women Rising: Strength, Mentorship, and Collective Success Women’s Month is a time to celebrate the leaders who inspire, mentor, and break barriers in their industries. Today, we’re honored to speak with Joanne Downs, VP of Customer Success, about the challenges she’s overcome, advice on career success, and her vision for the future of women in leadership. Whether you’re an aspiring leader or an experienced professional, Joanne provides valuable insights into building meaningful customer relationships and thriving in a rapid industry. Strength In Numbers The role of women in customer success has evolved, and now, they are at the forefront of innovation, defining the future of customer experience strategies and driving results. “I've seen the role of women evolve a great deal in the areas of STEM and in leadership. I graduated from college as only 1 of 3 women in my engineering discipline and I actually started my first job as the only female in a group of 24, so I'm encouraged daily to see women in technical fields. The challenges for women don't go away, but it is encouraging to have more women to work through those challenges together.” As more women are stepping into leadership roles, advocating for change, and mentoring the next generation, we can continue to build a more inclusive and impactful future. Building Professional Connections Strong professional relationships are the foundation of success in any leadership role, especially in customer success. “Be genuine. Honesty and an open communication style goes a long way. Be accountable, work hard and let your work speak for itself. If you're ever feeling lost, seek a mentor and don't be afraid to ask for help.” Credibility is built through consistency, expertise, and confidence. Be sure to celebrate your achievements, advocate for yourself, and ask for guidance when needed. Overall, everyone is working towards the same goal—to drive business success—so your wins are a part of the collective success. Women in Leadership Roles Women bring a unique blend of building strong relationships, leading with empathy, and navigating complex problems, making them influential leaders. As someone who is constantly collaborating with others and in a leadership role, we asked Joanne what qualities she believes set women apart. “Good question. In general, I think empathy sets women apart as leaders. God gave women the innate ability to nurture teams and foster collaboration, and I think this does give women the opportunity to help people grow as a team.” By leveraging these qualities and continuing to drive results, women will not only shape the future of the industry but also empower the next generation of leaders. Believing In Your Abilities Many women struggle with imposter syndrome in leadership roles, which can be a significant hurdle, but it should never allow you to undermine what you bring to the table. Whether you are early in your career or in a leadership role, Joanne shares advice that can help you get ahead and remind you how far you’ve come! “My biggest piece of advice is just to trust yourself. Your capabilities have gotten you to where you are, so it's important to build upon your strengths and be mindful of your weaknesses, but don't let them make you question where you are. Learn from your mistakes and if you're ever really feeling strongly about imposter syndrome, ask yourself the question, if your male colleagues would ask themselves and feel the same way and 9 times out of 10, the answer is no.” To combat imposter syndrome, focus on what you have achieved and celebrate your continuous growth. Embracing new challenges as learning opportunities can reinforce confidence. Own your success and know that you are exactly where you are meant to be. Passing the Torch True impact comes from breaking barriers, fostering inclusivity, and ensuring that future generations of women in business have the resources to excel. “I hope to be a Beacon of light. I want to be an advocate for women who are having a hard time finding their way in a male-dominated industry. I want to be seen as a mentor, but I also want to help encourage those people to become mentors themselves for the next generation.” Feeling inspired? • Protecting the U.S. Military From GPS Jamming and Spoofing

This C4ISRNET white paper highlights measures to assure maintainence of critical operations for U.S. forces; featuring Tyler Hohman of Orolia Defense & Security. Protecting the U.S. Military From GPS Jamming and Spoofing U.S. troops first used GPS to create an informational and navigation advantage on the battlefield during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The success of GPS and the PNT advantage led to a huge increase in the technology’s use by the military. However, as the United States has relied more on GPS, any absence of these Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) capabilities has led to greater risk. U.S. forces who need GPS to provide critical, precise information may lose their operational advantage without it. U.S. adversaries have learned that this vulnerability can be exploited. If they can deny U.S. forces the advantage of GPS-based PNT capabilities, they can reduce their effectiveness. This white paper from C4ISRNET discusses how preparation and countermeasures can assure U.S. forces maintain critical capabilities. Engineering Her Future: Women in Science A powerful reminder that success is about daring to embrace your passions, navigate obstacles, and carve a unique way forward. We spotlight the encouraging journey of Kristina Naumovska, a mechanical engineer at Safran Federal Systems. As we celebrate National Women and Girls in Science Day on February 11th, Kristina’s path is one to inspire women and girls who dream of making a mark in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) world. A Career Meant For Her Kristina’s journey to becoming a mechanical engineer was not a straightforward one but it serves as a testament to the fact that life often takes un in unexpected directions. In our conversation with her, we learned that her early struggles did not deter her from pursuing a career in STEM but instead drove her to explore a different route. "I originally wanted to pursue a career in dentistry, but I struggled with biology. However, I enjoyed my other science courses and was especially good at math. My mom was a mechanical engineer as well, so I figured it might be in my blood. I decided to give that a shot instead, I’m happy I did!" Looking at things differently, Kristina didn’t let her struggle discourage her from going after what was a possibility to create a rewarding career path for herself. Those stepping stones allowed her to discover her true calling. Overcoming Obstacles As a young woman in a male-dominated field, Kristina struggled with raising questions when confused. Through the great surroundings of amazing people who lifted her up and advocated for her voice to be heard, she realized how her fear held her back. "Going through college and my first internship, I would struggle speaking up when I was confused or had questions to avoid looking unintelligent. I realized quickly that this mindset wouldn’t get me far, and that I’m not expected to know everything. I’m thankful I had great professors, coworkers and leaders that made it clear that no question is a silly one." Kristina’s experience speaks to a broader issue many women face in STEM: to silence oneself out of fear of judgment. Yet, she emphasizes that asking questions to seek clarity is essential for success. It helps contribute to the advancement of both you and the team. A Look Towards the Future Looking toward the future of STEM, she is excited about the connection of artificial intelligence (AI) and product design. “This breakthrough can aid engineers in generating designs in CAD and minimize error.” Her enthusiasm for AI reflects the excitement many in the field feel about the continuous reshaping of the future of science and engineering.
