  • Shaping The World Around Us | SafranFederalSystems

Shaping The World Around Us We are proud to celebrate National Engineers’ Week, a time dedicated to recognizing engineers' impact on shaping the world around us. At Safran Federal Systems, we are fortunate to have an incredible team of engineers whose problem-solving skills, efficiency-driven innovations, and dedication propel our company forward. Their contributions deserve recognition, and this week we are honored to spotlight one of our own: Michael Trinidad. This year’s theme, “Design Your Future”, is both a call to action and a celebration of the limitless possibilities in engineering. Michael Trinidad’s journey, from an aspiring young builder to a Mechanical Engineer and now an Engineering Manager showcases the power of tenacity, adaptability, and creative power. To gain a deeper insight into his career we sat down with Michael for an intriguing conversation about the moment his passion for engineering took shape, the experience that defined his career, and one of the many achievements he is most proud of. Looking Through a Different Lens Great engineers are always evolving and learning. A great piece of advice he has received as an engineer and kept along the way is: "You can’t change physics just because someone wants you to. It’s something that seems obvious but looking at certain problems through that lens has helped me step back and look for unique trade spaces to solve complex problems or project requirements." In engineering, there can be limits to what is possible, but the key is to work within those constraints and find creative solutions that push boundaries without ignoring the laws of nature. Engineering Is All Around Us Have you ever stopped to think about how much longer your daily routine would take if you didn’t have the products or systems you rely on? Here is something you might consider about the engineering world after reading this: "It exists everywhere. From the simplest objects to the most complex, some engineering work went into the creation, fabrication, and delivery of that product." Engineering is all around us and we don’t often notice its effect. From the technology we use to the infrastructures we depend on, engineering makes everyday tasks more efficient, seamless, and innovative. A Passion for Building and Creating From an early age, Michael was captivated by the process of building and creating with his hands. "I’ve always loved building things and learning how things work or are made. I grew up on building LEGO and stealing scrap wood from my dad to build treehouses so my hands on problem solving nature led me to mechanical engineering. The Defense industry was interesting to me because it’s where a lot of cutting-edge technology is developed and utilized to solve complex, meaningful and potentially life-saving products and services." This early curiosity guided him to study engineering, ultimately leading to a career in the defense industry, where he applies his skills in solving complex challenges and driving innovation. Milestones of Progress Not every challenge has a clear solution, making the path less smooth. Yet, it is through these obstacles that we push our limits, grow, and come out stronger. "Transitioning from an individual contributor as a mechanical engineer to an engineering manager of multiple disciplines. Finding the right balance of technical oversight, team support, and learning new domain knowledge was a challenge that I’m proud to have navigated and found my place in the new role." Challenges may not always feel rewarding at the moment, but looking back, they become milestones of progress and resilience. Now, stepping into his managerial role, he can draw from his past experiences and guide his team toward success. Leaving a Lasting Impact Throughout Michael’s incredible journey, he has contributed to remarkable projects, each leaving a lasting impact. When asked to highlight just one, he reflected on the many milestones that shaped his career. "At my previous employer, I had the opportunity to work heavily on the design for the flagship multi-channel military radio, the AN/PRC-163. The complexity and functionality of that product still amazes me to this day." As we navigate our paths, we encounter unexpected milestones—proof of our capability and perseverance. These moments are reminders of how far we have come and deserve to be celebrated. We are delighted to highlight Michael’s journey and share his experience as he is continuously making an impact at Safran, but most significantly the world. Feeling inspired? • Protecting the U.S. Military From GPS Jamming and Spoofing

This C4ISRNET white paper highlights measures to assure maintainence of critical operations for U.S. forces; featuring Tyler Hohman of Orolia Defense & Security. Protecting the U.S. Military From GPS Jamming and Spoofing U.S. troops first used GPS to create an informational and navigation advantage on the battlefield during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The success of GPS and the PNT advantage led to a huge increase in the technology’s use by the military. However, as the United States has relied more on GPS, any absence of these Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) capabilities has led to greater risk. U.S. forces who need GPS to provide critical, precise information may lose their operational advantage without it. U.S. adversaries have learned that this vulnerability can be exploited. If they can deny U.S. forces the advantage of GPS-based PNT capabilities, they can reduce their effectiveness. This white paper from C4ISRNET discusses how preparation and countermeasures can assure U.S. forces maintain critical capabilities. • Orolia’s GNSS Simulators Now Support an Ultra-Low Latency of 5ms

Orolia recently announced the launch of its Real-Time Performance capability that achieves an ultra-low latency of five milliseconds. The latest advancement from Skydel utilizes software-defined advantages to deliver limit-defying real-time performance. Orolia’s GNSS Simulators Now Support an Ultra-Low Latency of 5ms ROCHESTER, NY, June 17, 2021 Orolia recently announced the launch of its Real-Time Performance capability that achieves an ultra-low latency of five milliseconds. The feature will be standard on all Skydel-powered GNSS simulators. Skydel is the software-defined simulation engine that powers Orolia’s advanced GNSS simulators including its BroadSim (available via Orolia Defense & Security) and GSG product lines. “Skydel is known by users for its intuitive nature and ability to be quickly re-deployed for a variety of projects. Delivering Real-Time Performance with latency as low as five milliseconds further shows that Orolia is a market leader empowering our customers by exceeding their expectations,” said Orolia Defense & Security Director of Engineering Tim Erbes. Skydel’s software-defined architecture, offering unparalleled flexibility and adaptability, is designed to meet the most demanding GNSS simulation testing requirements in the automotive, military, space and other high-tech industries. Skydel also supports Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulations without sacrificing ultra-low latency and high-end performance. The user interface boasts a sophisticated dashboard, where the Real-Time Performance graphs are located. The tool enables users to grade the simulator’s performance, interpret data, diagnose inefficiencies, and optimize scenarios on the fly. In the video tutorial , Orolia demonstrates how the simulation engine processes data and how easy it is to read the graphs through its distinct visualization and precise indications. As the system reaches its limits, it remains stable and fully operational, preserving the integrity of the simulation. Erbes said the Real-Time Performance graphs not only instill confidence in the simulator but allow for better integration in the testbed. “For example, instead of just hoping their hardware-in-the-Loop configuration is working, users can view the real-time data and see that low latency is being maintained,” he added. “This feature provides enhanced visibility not only into the performance of the simulation but also into the reliability of the hardware-in-the-loop integration, resulting in a more robust solution. This is critical when generating complex environments with high dynamics, jamming, spoofing, repeating, and alternative PNT sensors.” About Orolia Orolia is the world leader in Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) solutions that improve the reliability, performance and safety of critical, remote or high-risk operations, even in GPS/GNSS denied environments. Orolia Defense & Security Awarded $1.7M U.S. Military Contract ROCHESTER, NY, June 18, 2020 In a recently awarded contract, the U.S. military selected Orolia Defense and Security to supply multiple BroadSim™ advanced GPS simulator systems, a contract valued at $1.7 million (USD), in an effort to upgrade testing facilities and field test assets. These new simulator systems will enable better testing of widely deployed military GPS receivers, which are integrated into air and ground-based Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) systems. BroadSim will be leveraged with Orolia’s PANACEA™ test suite, currently utilized by the U.S. military to conduct automated testing and analysis for PNT system performance, vulnerabilities, and more. BroadSim will bring versatility to the testing process by supporting diverse test methods and environments such as a laboratory setting, or an Over-The-Air (OTA) field test event. BroadSim was selected based on its flexibility to support the ever-changing military tasks at hand. It can be easily configured to support laboratory testing one day, and field testing the next with its four independent RF outputs, removable drives, and software-defined architecture. “Equipping our actively deployed warfighters with state-of-the-art technology is of utmost importance and can mean the difference between mission success and failure. To help achieve that goal, Orolia’s GPS testing and simulation solutions ensure that these systems are battlefield ready,” said Tyler Hohman, Orolia Defense and Security’s Director of Products. Now more than ever, strong relationships between government and industry are vital to drive innovation and maximize the impact of available resources. The U.S. military and other federal agencies such as DHS host several test events per year where industry partners are invited to participate, such as GPS Testing for Critical Infrastructure (GET-CI) . Orolia will host a webinar on this topic on Thursday, July 16 at 2:00 PM EDT, titled “PNT Vulnerability Testing for Critical Infrastructure - Lessons Learned from Defense.” The federal government considers PNT to be a critical aspect of mission success, as outlined in this recent C4ISRNET Whitepaper “Protecting the U.S. Military PNT Advantage from GPS Jamming and Spoofing” and defined in the PNT Executive Order . For the 2021 federal fiscal year, the U.S. Army alone budgeted over $275 million towards Assured PNT Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E), as published in the 2021 Defense Budget.
