  • Shaping The World Around Us | SafranFederalSystems

Shaping The World Around Us We are proud to celebrate National Engineers’ Week, a time dedicated to recognizing engineers' impact on shaping the world around us. At Safran Federal Systems, we are fortunate to have an incredible team of engineers whose problem-solving skills, efficiency-driven innovations, and dedication propel our company forward. Their contributions deserve recognition, and this week we are honored to spotlight one of our own: Michael Trinidad. This year’s theme, “Design Your Future”, is both a call to action and a celebration of the limitless possibilities in engineering. Michael Trinidad’s journey, from an aspiring young builder to a Mechanical Engineer and now an Engineering Manager showcases the power of tenacity, adaptability, and creative power. To gain a deeper insight into his career we sat down with Michael for an intriguing conversation about the moment his passion for engineering took shape, the experience that defined his career, and one of the many achievements he is most proud of. Looking Through a Different Lens Great engineers are always evolving and learning. A great piece of advice he has received as an engineer and kept along the way is: "You can’t change physics just because someone wants you to. It’s something that seems obvious but looking at certain problems through that lens has helped me step back and look for unique trade spaces to solve complex problems or project requirements." In engineering, there can be limits to what is possible, but the key is to work within those constraints and find creative solutions that push boundaries without ignoring the laws of nature. Engineering Is All Around Us Have you ever stopped to think about how much longer your daily routine would take if you didn’t have the products or systems you rely on? Here is something you might consider about the engineering world after reading this: "It exists everywhere. From the simplest objects to the most complex, some engineering work went into the creation, fabrication, and delivery of that product." Engineering is all around us and we don’t often notice its effect. From the technology we use to the infrastructures we depend on, engineering makes everyday tasks more efficient, seamless, and innovative. A Passion for Building and Creating From an early age, Michael was captivated by the process of building and creating with his hands. "I’ve always loved building things and learning how things work or are made. I grew up on building LEGO and stealing scrap wood from my dad to build treehouses so my hands on problem solving nature led me to mechanical engineering. The Defense industry was interesting to me because it’s where a lot of cutting-edge technology is developed and utilized to solve complex, meaningful and potentially life-saving products and services." This early curiosity guided him to study engineering, ultimately leading to a career in the defense industry, where he applies his skills in solving complex challenges and driving innovation. Milestones of Progress Not every challenge has a clear solution, making the path less smooth. Yet, it is through these obstacles that we push our limits, grow, and come out stronger. "Transitioning from an individual contributor as a mechanical engineer to an engineering manager of multiple disciplines. Finding the right balance of technical oversight, team support, and learning new domain knowledge was a challenge that I’m proud to have navigated and found my place in the new role." Challenges may not always feel rewarding at the moment, but looking back, they become milestones of progress and resilience. Now, stepping into his managerial role, he can draw from his past experiences and guide his team toward success. Leaving a Lasting Impact Throughout Michael’s incredible journey, he has contributed to remarkable projects, each leaving a lasting impact. When asked to highlight just one, he reflected on the many milestones that shaped his career. "At my previous employer, I had the opportunity to work heavily on the design for the flagship multi-channel military radio, the AN/PRC-163. The complexity and functionality of that product still amazes me to this day." As we navigate our paths, we encounter unexpected milestones—proof of our capability and perseverance. These moments are reminders of how far we have come and deserve to be celebrated. We are delighted to highlight Michael’s journey and share his experience as he is continuously making an impact at Safran, but most significantly the world. Feeling inspired? • LEO PNT | Orolia Defense & Security

As GNSS vulnerabilities rapidly evolve, integrating LEO PNT into your solution is critical. Discover success by testing and integrating a plan from the start. Home • Applications • LEO PNT LEO PNT Low Earth Orbit Positioning Navigation, and Timing. What is LEO PNT? • Why LEO PNT? • How is LEO PNT being implemented? • LEO PNT Resources What's The Deal? As GNSS vulnerabilities rapidly evolve, Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations are emerging onto the scene, resulting in many unique solutions poised to address various applications. Whether you plan to develop your own LEO PNT solution or integrate LEO PNT into your solution, it is critical to have a testing and integration plan in place from the very beginning. Orolia's subject matter experts, combined with the industry's leading software-defined platform, will ensure your success in deploying this much-anticipated technology. What is LEO PNT? LEO PNT is the use of signals, satellites, and constellations existing in Earth's lower orbit for Positioning, Navigation and Timing in systems. LEO PNT can be used for commercial or defense purposes, offering many stand-alone benefits, and additional capabilities when paired with traditional GNSS constellations. Although roughly eighty-six percent of operating satellites are in LEO, their utilization to support PNT-specific needs is relatively new from a historic perspective. LEO = Lower Earth Orbit PNT = Positioning, Navigation and Timing Why LEO PNT? GPS as we know it today has evolved and expanded beyond its original intent. To put it bluntly, relying solely on conventional GPS satellites just doesn't cut it anymore, especially when it comes to critical infrastructure and missions. Though there are several GPS alternatives on the market today, what most of them lack is the ability to operate independently with a high level of accuracy and resiliency. Two things that make LEO constellations different than those in other orbital regions are its shorter distance to earth and constant movement. This results in greater performance with effects on faster speeds, higher signal power, increased bandwidth, and decreased susceptibility to attacks. Additionally, commercial providers can offer more targeted and advanced features by funneling investments into research and development. One such feature is security, thanks to proprietary encryption methods and custom frequencies. Another benefit is the expectation to prioritize, maintain and improve upon technology that aligns with certain needs, translating to rapid development cycles. When you think about it, LEO PNT is really a no-brainer. What is LEO PNT? Why LEO PNT? How is LEO PNT Being Implemented? Constellation Development • Technology is utilizing satellites for PNT information more than ever • It is integral to to test their PNT systems before they ar e deployed • It is key to develop a test environment for LEO constellations alongside the development of the constellations themselves. • A flexible simulation system that can evolve is best equipped for the advent of new LEO constellations. How Simulation Can Aid Development • Constellation: Increase communication and available for testing ASAP • Receiver: View receiver power in GPS denied environments, view acquisition times, and cost savings • Systems: Vulnerability, repeatability, and acceptance/verification testing How is LEO PNT Being Implemented? Simulation of a New Constellation Software-Defined Test Environment It's a fact that LEO constellations require more satellites due to their operating mechanism. Hence why there are more satellites (like a lot more) in LEO orbit than there are in the GNSS constellations that have been simulated in the past. Traditional GNSS Simulators don't have the built-in architecture to support this large number of satellites, especially if you want to simulate multiple constellations simultaneously, which produces the most realistic scenarios. This is where software-defined simulators take the cake. It's important to understand that in a true software-defined system there are no fixed hardware channels limiting the number of satellites and frequency bands that can be generated. Some providers may use crafty language to make you think otherwise, so be sure to clarify this when choosing a simulator. Software-defined systems, such as BroadSim , gives you the flexibility to meet your LEO needs without feature-specific add-ons that generally take up more space. A simple software license upgrade gives you access to the new LEO constellation, allowing you to have integrated all-in-view testing between GNSS and LEO constellations. Whether you choose our turnkey BroadSim products or need a more customized BroadSim solution to meet your LEO requirements, you will always use the same intuitive user interface that you are familiar with. BroadSim for LEO PNT The Simulator Preferred by Engineers Here are some of the top reasons why software-defined simulators like BroadSim provide a more dynamic and future-proof solution when it comes to LEO PNT: 1 | Takes advantage of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products to evolve as new technology emerges 2 | GPU can handle the generation of more signals than a traditional FPGA-driven solution 3 | Can rapidly add new constellations and evolve existing ones 4 | New constellations can be incorporated with software instead of additional hardware 5 | Rather than focusing on hardware improvements, engineers can focus on simulation 6 | Upgrade cycles are possible more frequently LEO PNT Resources Webinar Tech Brief White Paper LEO PNT Resources Get a Leg Up on LEO PNT Safran Federal Systems is integrating new constellations for simulation today and can help do the same for yours. Powered by the Skydel Simulation Engine, BroadSim Solo brings advanced GNSS simulation to every engineer's desk at a remarkably affordable price point, offering software-defined features and benefits... Orolia Defense & Security Adds New Simulator to BroadSim Product Line ROCHESTER, NY, August 25, 2021 BroadSim Solo Brings Advanced GNSS Scenario Creation to Every Engineer’s Desk Orolia Defense & Security, the leader in M-Code solutions for Resilient PNT, has released the latest addition to its GNSS simulator family, BroadSim Solo , today at the Institute of Navigation’s Joint Navigation Conference being held in Covington, Ky. The Solo joins the BroadSim line of Skydel-powered GNSS simulators, which includes models suited for Hardware-In-The-Loop and Multi-Element Antenna/CRPA testing. See the BroadSim Solo Demo LIVE at #JNC2021 : BroadSim Solo will be demonstrated in the JNC Exhibit Hall at Orolia Defense & Security booth No. 117 today through Aug. 26. BroadSim Solo shares the same Skydel Simulation Engine that runs on a standard BroadSim, BroadSim Anechoic and BroadSim Wavefront. It supports advanced scenario creation features and the benefits provided by a software-defined architecture such as high-dynamics, 1000Hz iteration update rate and ultra-low latency of 5ms. Nearly all civilian GNSS signals can be generated through its single RF output (one frequency band at a time), along with GPS AES M-Code, jamming or spoofing signals. BroadSim Solo’s compact form factor is designed to do away with bulk, fitting nicely at a typical desk or workstation without taking it over. But it’s more than just convenience – the Solo addresses the permanent challenge that engineers face with laboratory capacity and availability. “Creating complex test scenarios can be a tedious process, especially when emulating challenged environments,” said Tim Erbes, director of engineering for Orolia Defense & Security. “Having the ability to create scripts at your desk significantly frees up lab time and space for running these important simulations. Also, scenario creation is no longer limited to one person fixed to one system. Imagine a team of engineers, each with a BroadSim Solo, simultaneously building tests. Having a whole fleet of BroadSim Solos? It’s game-changing.” BroadSim Solo with the Skydel Simulation Engine offers an intuitive user interface, comprehensive API (supporting Python, C++ and C#), automation tools and custom plug-ins that will speed up development cycles, increase performance and ultimately drive innovation. What’s even better is the BroadSim Solo’s remarkably affordable price-point. “In an effort to enhance the customer experience and expand the reach of advanced GNSS simulators, we wanted to offer an affordable solution with all of the same core features as our most advanced BroadSim systems,” said Tyler Hohman, director of products for Orolia Defense & Security. “This gives our customers the opportunity to place more simulators in the hands of engineers and scientists without sacrificing capabilities. Our hope is that customers will find value in having a simulation ecosystem that is scalable based on their requirements.” Harness the power of BroadSim Solo’s efficiency and affordability. GET QUOTE About The 8230AJ anti-jam antenna is a high gain (40 dB) GNSS outdoor antenna with a unique conical antenna pattern that rejects interference from the horizon. The antenna rejects signals at lower elevation angles – where most of the interference comes from – and only receives signals from higher elevation angles where the true satellites are. This way, you get all the performance and timing accuracy you would with a standard antenna plus 20 dB or more of interference rejection. It uses a three-stage low noise amplifier, a mid- section SAW, and a tight pre-filter to protect against saturation by high level sub-harmonics and L-band signals. The antenna covers GPS L1, GLONASS L1, BeiDou B1, Galileo E1, and QZSS L1. Designed for harsh environments The 8230AJ Antenna is ideal for applications with high interference. Its weather-proof housing is IP67 compliant offering a high degree of protection against dust and water. Its cylindrical radome is made of high impact UV stabilized polycarbonate to protect against rain, ice, snow and salt spray. Click to download the 8230 AJ data sheet. VIEW DATA SHEET
