  • Veterans Day: Richard Robida | SafranFederalSystems

Veterans Day: Richard Robida What branch of the military did you serve in, and for how long? US Marine Corps (99-06) Medically Retired What were your duties? I held 2 Military Occupation Specialties. 6672 (Aviation Supply Specialist) where I supported Fixed Wing and Rotor Wing Squadrons with aircraft parts, support equipment and more to ensure mission readiness. I was also a Primary Marksmanship Instructor (8531) responsible for providing technical instruction and training on Marine Corps weapons to ensure combat readiness. Marines are required to qualify annually at distances of 200, 300 and 500 yards with open sights/iron sites (no scope). Stationed and deployed overseas in Okinawa, Japan, Guam, Australia and Korea, and Stateside in San Diego and Texas What inspired you to join the military? My father served 21 years in the Navy, and my older brother joined the Army prior to my graduation. We always knew education was the key to success, and the military afforded the opportunity to earn a degree at little to no cost, as well as serve the nation. I chose the Marine Corps because I wanted to be the best, and when I finished my service, I could tell future employers that I served in the greatest and most professional fighting force in the world. Semper Fidelis! What does Veterans Day mean to you personally? It means generations of selfless sacrifice, even when those sacrifices are not always known or understood by others. Veteran’s Day is a moment to reflect and honor those who volunteered and gave up their rights as they knew them for a greater good. What drew you to Safran? I actually sold MRO products to Safran, TurboMeca, MicroTurbo and Sagem Aviation in Grand Prairie, TX as a Grainger Account Manager, so when the opportunity was available, I leaned in with the hopes of joining such a large, well known entity and company. What skills or values from your service do you apply in your role here? Accountability, leadership, teamwork, punctuality, respect for authority, confidence are some that come to mind. In your opinion, what do Veterans bring to the workplace? You intrinsically get an employee that understands sacrifice and working problems and tasks to completion, not just to check a box. Most veterans have also lead teams and departments, so whether they are in a leadership role or not, you get someone who can provide valuable input and feedback to move the dial. What’s a memorable experience from your time in service? Oddly enough, seeing major storms on the other side of the world was eye opening, I grew up in N. Charleston, SC, so I saw major hurricanes growing up, but while stationed in Okinawa Japan, I went through 2 Super Typhoons, and to witness the wrath, but then the immediate snap to action and mission focused mentality, while in the aftermath, was something to behold. (Not to mention having to eat MREs for days from pallets….fun times) What’s your proudest accomplishment — either in or out of uniform? Accomplishing my goal of higher education. Raised by a single mother and career teacher with 3 Master’s Degrees, finishing my degree was the goal, even after I was Medically retired. With my GI Bill and additional Veterans Affairs benefits, I was able to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in 2011, then went on to get my MBA in 2015. Since my older brother did the same, my mother is the happiest and proudest she can be, still. As an added bonus, my benefits are also paying for my 20 year old daughter’s education as well. One of our “Safran Together” values is Succeeding Together. How do you embody this in your role? I work to relevantly engage with our customers to provide support and solutions to their needs, and often times, this requires multiple contact points (Apps Engineers, Sales Support, Field Support, Customer Support etc). I make it a point to align our customers directly to the source so we can synergistically come up with an answer or solution. This leads to multiple touch points for the customer, often times with the same person or team of individuals. I have had customers, on numerous occasions mention or ask for specific team members, as they are comfortable and have trust in partnering directly with our team. Our customers feel we are their partners, and there aren’t any hidden figures behind the curtain. Our team is their team. Feeling inspired? • Shaping The World Around Us | SafranFederalSystems

Shaping The World Around Us We are proud to celebrate National Engineers’ Week, a time dedicated to recognizing engineers' impact on shaping the world around us. At Safran Federal Systems, we are fortunate to have an incredible team of engineers whose problem-solving skills, efficiency-driven innovations, and dedication propel our company forward. Their contributions deserve recognition, and this week we are honored to spotlight one of our own: Michael Trinidad. This year’s theme, “Design Your Future”, is both a call to action and a celebration of the limitless possibilities in engineering. Michael Trinidad’s journey, from an aspiring young builder to a Mechanical Engineer and now an Engineering Manager showcases the power of tenacity, adaptability, and creative power. To gain a deeper insight into his career we sat down with Michael for an intriguing conversation about the moment his passion for engineering took shape, the experience that defined his career, and one of the many achievements he is most proud of. Looking Through a Different Lens Great engineers are always evolving and learning. A great piece of advice he has received as an engineer and kept along the way is: "You can’t change physics just because someone wants you to. It’s something that seems obvious but looking at certain problems through that lens has helped me step back and look for unique trade spaces to solve complex problems or project requirements." In engineering, there can be limits to what is possible, but the key is to work within those constraints and find creative solutions that push boundaries without ignoring the laws of nature. Engineering Is All Around Us Have you ever stopped to think about how much longer your daily routine would take if you didn’t have the products or systems you rely on? Here is something you might consider about the engineering world after reading this: "It exists everywhere. From the simplest objects to the most complex, some engineering work went into the creation, fabrication, and delivery of that product." Engineering is all around us and we don’t often notice its effect. From the technology we use to the infrastructures we depend on, engineering makes everyday tasks more efficient, seamless, and innovative. A Passion for Building and Creating From an early age, Michael was captivated by the process of building and creating with his hands. "I’ve always loved building things and learning how things work or are made. I grew up on building LEGO and stealing scrap wood from my dad to build treehouses so my hands on problem solving nature led me to mechanical engineering. The Defense industry was interesting to me because it’s where a lot of cutting-edge technology is developed and utilized to solve complex, meaningful and potentially life-saving products and services." This early curiosity guided him to study engineering, ultimately leading to a career in the defense industry, where he applies his skills in solving complex challenges and driving innovation. Milestones of Progress Not every challenge has a clear solution, making the path less smooth. Yet, it is through these obstacles that we push our limits, grow, and come out stronger. "Transitioning from an individual contributor as a mechanical engineer to an engineering manager of multiple disciplines. Finding the right balance of technical oversight, team support, and learning new domain knowledge was a challenge that I’m proud to have navigated and found my place in the new role." Challenges may not always feel rewarding at the moment, but looking back, they become milestones of progress and resilience. Now, stepping into his managerial role, he can draw from his past experiences and guide his team toward success. Leaving a Lasting Impact Throughout Michael’s incredible journey, he has contributed to remarkable projects, each leaving a lasting impact. When asked to highlight just one, he reflected on the many milestones that shaped his career. "At my previous employer, I had the opportunity to work heavily on the design for the flagship multi-channel military radio, the AN/PRC-163. The complexity and functionality of that product still amazes me to this day." As we navigate our paths, we encounter unexpected milestones—proof of our capability and perseverance. These moments are reminders of how far we have come and deserve to be celebrated. We are delighted to highlight Michael’s journey and share his experience as he is continuously making an impact at Safran, but most significantly the world. Feeling inspired? • Equipment Pointing & Radar Directional Capabilities For Defense Applications

Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) that provide true north-finding capabilities is an extremely helpful and flexible alternative because it allows vehicles to have high accuracy orientation capabilities for their mounted weapons or radar payloads. Home • PNT Library • Equipment Pointing & Radar Directional Capabilities For Defense Applications Equipment Pointing & Radar Directional Capabilities For Defense Applications DOWNLOAD PDF By Anthony Full Problem We Solve In order to properly orient a vehicle-mounted weapon, or any radar system that relies on global navigation satellite signals, vehicle crews need accurate heading data to point their equipment. Operators may start with estimating trajectory paths, but it is hard to know exactly where their equipment is pointing because any slight change in angle causes a massive change in impact location or radar direction. Operating in a GNSS-denied environment also presents challenges, and it would be time consuming and potentially dangerous to wait for clean signal reception. Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) that provide true north-finding capabilities is an extremely helpful and flexible alternative because it allows vehicles to have high accuracy orientation capabilities for their mounted weapons or radar payloads. They can minutely adjust their angles or rotation without the aid of GPS, and without being susceptible to vibrations and shocks. Why Is It Important Having precise orientation capabilities is critical in ensuring weapons effectively designate their targets. Likewise, having accurate orientation in radar systems is essential in the process of geographically locating objects. The act of orienting a vehicle weapon or radar is not trivial: accurate shooting requires complex calculations from numerous factors including determining level ground, finding the north pole, measuring wind speed and direction, and elevation of the target. Highly accurate equipment pointing can mean the difference between mission failure and success. Therefore, having a robust navigation system that can provide heading data in real time is of paramount importance for defense applications. Given that the National Intelligence Council has identified an increasing trend in jamming and spoofing attacks, the need for navigation systems to be able to operate independent of GPS signals is also becoming important. Inertial navigation systems need to be able to operate in both normal conditions as well as GPS-denied environments. Of course, there are different grades of accuracy for equipment pointing depending on your needs. And we’ll cover the most relevant solutions next. How We Solve it When it comes to navigation systems that can provide heading data in real time Safran has field-proven solutions for diverse defense applications. The Geonyx product incorporates HRG technology, unlike GPS, INS does not rely on external signals for navigation and heading. Instead, it uses motion sensors and rotation sensors to calculate the position, orientation and velocity of the vehicle based on internal data. The Geonyx will output pitch, roll, and heading data to the vehicles weapon system or to the vehicles radar system via ethernet. GEONYX INERTIAL NAVIGATION SYSTEM Geonyx is an INS solution for ground vehicles and artillery pointing systems, offering a virtually unlimited and maintenance-free lifespan. It can achieve a pointing accuracy of <0.5 mils thanks to HRG Crystal technology. It has quick and flexible alignment – even in GNSS-denied environments. DOWNLOAD PDF
